With an increase in the aging and obese population, chronic wounds such as diabetic, pressure, and venous leg ulcers are a major cause of distress and disability for patients. These conditions cost the health service over £1 billion per annum. Bacterial biofilm contamination is identified as major contributor to the failure of healing in chronic wounds and demands biofilm-targeted strategies.
The proposed project is trying to fundamentally understand the mechanism involved in fabrication of robust NO releasing surfaces for the dual purpose of wound healing and infection control.
